Who’s Your Pick: The Boss or The Piano Man?

by Kristin Roy

Bruce Springsteen, one of our favorites on FM89, continues to be timeless. Born in New Jersey in 1949, Bruce knew that there was no other route to take but the pureness of Rock n’ Roll. As the lead singer of the E Street Band and creating a solo career, we have the chance to listen to it all at WONC.

Throughout the years, Springsteen has wowed us with Born to Run, The River, and even newer albums like Western Stars in 2019. Now, FM89 takes you on a flashback to the past: the year is 1984 and Born in the USA is the first commercial music CD pressed in the U.S. by CBS Records. The album was recorded on analog master tapes, and originally issued on both LP and cassette. There’s always a catch, though; Springsteen was the first CD fresh off the presses in the U.S., but Billy Joel took the title of the first CD ever to hit the public in 1982 when 52nd Street was released in Japan.

Joel, born not too far from Springsteen in New York in 1949, is known to us still as the “Piano Man.” He’s the sixth best-selling recording artist of all time, and the third best-selling solo artist in the U.S., topping off with over 150 million records sold all over the globe. He brought us An Innocent Man, Glass Houses, and Songs in the Attic, and he beat out Springsteen for the first CD released.

On FM89, you have the chance to listen to Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, and many more of your favorites; we’d never have you pick just one! Keep rocking with us, and learning more about some of your favorite artists.
