WONC Sports: Super Bowl Preview

by Lucas Burris

This Sunday is the culmination of one of the most unprecedented NFL season we have ever covered. From the very beginning we did not know what to expect, and that held true each and every week of the season. Multiple games were postponed and moved due to the current pandemic, zero notable players were traded at the midseason deadline, Aaron Rodgers revived his career to earn his 3rd career MVP, Tom Brady was highly successful outside of New England and the Patriots weren’t very good without him, the Bears made the playoffs at 8-8 after losing six straight games in the middle of the season, and we almost had a Packers and Bills Super Bowl. Instead, we have a Chiefs and Buccaneers Super Bowl, which is only surprising if you don’t know that Tom Brady played for Tampa Bay this year, but still just feels weird.

The Chiefs and the Buccaneers will face off in Tampa Bay on Sunday. The Buccaneers will be the first team ever to play in the Super Bowl on their home field, and the Chiefs are looking to become the first team since the Patriots in 2003 & 2004 to win back-to-back Super Bowls. The game is being billed as the new guard versus the old guard as Brady faces off against Mahomes. Brady, in year twenty-one, is a 6x Super Bowl Champion, a 3x NFL MVP, and 4x Super Bowl MVP. Mahomes four years into his career is already a Super Bowl Champion, NFL MVP, and Super Bowl MVP, but many years away from coming close to Brady’s records.

The game is scheduled for Sunday at 5:30 PM central. The Chiefs are favored to win the game by 3 points, the over/under of the game is 56.5 points, and Patrick Mahomes is the favorite for the Super Bowl MVP.

To preview the game, the WONC Sports Department dived into the odds and the biggest betting lines around the Super Bowl. Below you can see our staff members picks for the game including the coin toss, which player will score the first touchdown, each quarter’s score prediction, and more. If you are searching for more coverage of the game, ‘From The Upper Deck’ will be covering the Super Bowl and all the storylines surrounding the game from 6pm to 8pm this Sunday.
