NCC Men’s Wrestling National Championship Preview

The North Central College Men’s Wrestling team competes Friday and Saturday at the Xtreme Center in Coralville, Iowa. Wrestling begins at 11:00 AM on Friday and 12:00 Pm on Saturday. The Cardinals send 10 wrestlers to compete in the national tournament hosted by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA). Here is what you need to know:

At 125, competing for the Cardinals will be freshman Brad Rosen. Rosen is seeded 5th after going 9-1 with a CCIW Championship on the year. His only loss this season is a 5-4 decision to #4 seed Brady Kyner from Wartburg. Rosen is on the same side of the bracket as Kyner along with #1 seed Braswell from Averett. Rosen wouldn’t have to face Kyner until the quarterfinals and Braswell until the semifinals.

At 133, competing for the Cardinals will be sophomore Robbie Precin. Precin is the #1 seed coming into the tournament undefeated. Precin, a national qualifier and NWCA All-American last season, controls his own path with eyes on a national title. His likely quarterfinal opponent is Pins from Wartburg, who he has defeated already this season.

At 141, competing for the Cardinals will be junior Andy Poniatowski. Poniatowski is unseeded and comes into the tournament with a 7-4 record. Poniatowski finished 5th at the CCIW tournament and draws #1 seed Kris Rumph from Wartburg in the first round, who he lost to 9-3 earlier this season.

At 149, competing for the Cardinals will be freshman Colin Mojena. Mojena is unseeded coming into the tournament with a record of 9-5. Mojena finished 5th at the CCIW tournament and draws unseeded Tyler Ramirez from Ferrum College in the first round. Mojena first seeded opponent would be in the second round versus #4 seed Gerke from Coe College.

At 157, competing for the Cardinals will be sophomore Cole Cervantes. Cervantes is the 8th seed in the tournament after finishing 6-3 on the season with a CCIW 2nd place finish. His first round draw is unseeded Brock Beck from Central College. Cervantes is the on the same side of the bracket as #1 seed Tristan Birt from Millikin, who he lost to 8-5 and 11-4 earlier this season.

At 165, competing for the Cardinals will be senior Rafael Roman. Roman is the #5 seed in the tournament after finishing the season 11-2 with a 2nd place finish at the CCIW tournament. Roman’s first round draw is unseeded Derick Duvall from Adrian College. His his likely quarterfinal opponent would be #4 seed Zarik Anderson from Dubuque, and his likely semifinal opponent would be #1 seed Bradan Birt from Millikin.

At 174, competing for the Cardinals will be freshman Jordan Chisum. Chisum is 4-4 on the season with a 3rd place finish at the CCIW tournament. Chisum has unseeded Logan Sears from Dubuque in the first round and would then go directely into #2 seed Nielsen from Augsburg in the 2nd round.

At 184, competing for the Cardinals will be sophomore Brock Montford. Montford is the #7 seed after finishing the season 13-0 with a CCIW Championship. Montford will wrestle unseeded Daniel Alonzo from Nebraska Wesleyan in the first round. His quarterfinal opponent would be #2 seed Liegel from Loras.

At 197, competing for the Cardinals will be junior Cody Baldridge. Baldridge is a 3x national qualifier and comes into the tournament as the #4 seed after finishing the season 6-2 with a 2nd place finish at the CCIW tournament. Baldridge draws unseeded Dillon Stevenson from Alma College in the first round, and his likely quarterfinal opponent would be #5 seed Braden Homsey from Ferrum.

At 285, competing for the Cardinals will be senior Ben Bergen. Bergen comes in as #7 seed after finishing the season 11-0 with a CCIW championship. Bergen will face off against unseeded Dawson Schwerdtfeger from Nebraska Wesleyan in the first round, and his likely quarterfinal opponent would #2 seed Dominick Wilson from Olivet College.
