Fat Dog Demands Your Attention

by Jesse Hudgins

First releases are important. It’s the opening statement of any artist, and if your attention isn’t grabbed, you may not want to return for another release. Bands like Weezer, Led Zeppelin, and The Killers come to mind when talking about the best debut releases. I think we need to add Fat Dog to that list.

Fat Dog is an English group that formed in 2020, and their debut LP, Woof, was released in 2024. Impressive isn’t the term to describe the statement Woof makes. In 30 minutes, Fat Dog leaves an impression that makes you want more. The energy put forward in each track dictates that your body moves and reacts to the song currently playing. There was a reason why the record is one of my favorites of 2024. Once I heard it, I couldn’t stop listening. I still can’t stop. Layers of instrumentation elevate the songs to higher levels, like “Wither” and “Running,” which play with peaks and valleys, adding new elements to the instrumentation with each peak. It doesn’t get too repetitive due to the 30-minute runtime.

Woof isn’t lacking in its themes, either, discussing religion, the end of the world, and humans at their most animalistic intentions. The way the lyrics are written and put forth perfectly by the unique vocals from Joe Love.

After Woof, I wondered how Fat Dog could top it. Then they released “Peace Song,” which is everything I loved about Woof and then some. I don’t know how they accomplished it, but Fat Dog expanded on what they built in Woof and then some. Even catchier lyrics and music are just the tip of the iceberg with “Peace Song.” Those I know who have listened to it have told me it’s a song they’ve repeatedly listened to. I would go as far as to argue that the song could be a single-of-the-year contender.

People need to pay attention to what Fat Dog is doing. It’s some of the most unique music out right now that’s consistently good. Plus, the live shows are parties. Fans who’ve attended have cited their crowd work and energy as something everyone should experience. Fat Dog may be a newer act, but they’re one that people need to watch and keep their eyes on. Their brand of electronic post-punk is an injection into the music scene that has been in demand. I’m here for the ride
