A Little Birdie Told Me: Dream Theater

by Jordan Mark

It’s that time again for another round of A Little Birdie Told Me. In this edition, we’ll be taking a look at the band Dream Theater.

Formerly known as Majesty, Dream Theater has made fifteen albums and recently won a Grammy for Best Metal Performance for their song “The Alien.” Though they got the prestigious honor in 2022, their existence has prevailed long before then. In fact, the band’s origins started as members John Petrucci, John Myung and Mike Portnoy were students at the Berklee College of Music. Though the line-up has changed throughout the decades (including the departure of Portnoy in 2010), the band has been consistent with their progressive style of music. And yes, they do tend to make long songs. As a matter of fact, let’s take a closer look at their longest song through fun facts:

  • The longest song they’ve made is “Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence.” Its total time is a whopping 42 minutes!
  • Though the longest song they’ve made, it’s broken up into eight movements that average 5-6 minutes in length.
  • The name of the song is the same as the album it comes from. The album is split into two discs, with the second disc solely containing the song.

That wraps up this edition of A Little Birdie Told Me. See you in the next one!
