A New Music Night to Remember with Modern Alibi

by Sierra Knutsen

If you’ve been tuning in to FM89 at all recently, you’ve definitely heard one of our most popular new songs by now, Out of You” by Modern Alibi. This alternative rock band has been taking their hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina by storm, consistently playing sold-out shows and even spreading their reach throughout the entire state. With their popularity rising, Modern Alibi embarked on their first multi-city tour earlier this year in New York City, Washington DC, Atlanta, Nashville, and Chicago.

Lead singer and songwriter Holden Scott reached out to WONC and invited four members of the radio station to come to their Chicago show because he appreciated how often we play their music. Of course we accepted, and I was one of the lucky people chosen to attend the concert! The band played at the iconic Subterranean in Chicago, supporting the headlining band The Criticals.

From the moment they stepped out onto the stage to the end of their set, every member of Modern Alibi kept the vibes in the venue at an all-time high. The show was played on a date near Halloween, and each member was dedicated enough to dress up as a character from the film Despicable Me, which really displayed how fun and authentic all the guys were right off the bat. You could tell how passionate each member of the band was just by looking at them perform- their energy was electric.

In most bands, the lead singer is usually the only person who gets the spotlight and often overshadows the rest of the band. With Modern Alibi, this definitely wasn’t the case. Every member of the band was highlighted throughout the night, showcasing their individual talents which enhanced the band’s presence overall. The rich chords and upbeat tempos blended together by bassist Josh King and lead guitarist Carter Ritz made the perfect background for Holden’s expressive vocals, which were even more amplified by the rush of drummer Christian Sturt. You could tell how close everyone in the band is, which made the audience connect to them even more than they already were.

When the show was over, I got the amazing opportunity to interview the band, and they exceeded my expectations. Everyone was so kind and attentive and answered every question genuinely and with great detail. You could tell they were truly appreciative of their fans and of the opportunities they’ve gotten from this tour. Modern Alibi deserves all the love they’ve been receiving from fans across the country, and I’m excited to watch as they continue to grow as artists.
