Chiefs Lose First Super Bowl in Three Years

by Anthony Licata

On Sunday, February 9, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles played in Super Bowl 59. The Chiefs were very lucky this season, winning games they should have lost. Patrick Mahomes is good, but I believe he gets too much credit for being the greatest QB to ever play the game of football. The Chief’s offensive line and defensive line were good, but the other parts of their team were just average. On the other hand, the Eagles had a solid team. Signing Saquan Barkley in the offseason turned out to be the best free agent signing of the year as he broke the single season record for the most rushing yards during the NFL season when the postseason is included.

Let’s dive a little bit into the game. Things didn’t start off well for the defending champion Chiefs, but it did start off well for the Eagles. They came out firing in the first quarter, scoring a total of…7 points? Ok, yes, seven points doesn’t seem like much, but their defense stepped up big time. The second quarter was huge for the Eagles, scoring 17 points against the Chiefs’ zero, and at halftime, the score was 24-0 Eagles.

At the start of the second half, the Chiefs finally started to play like a playoff team. Mahomes passed the ball more accurately and confidently to his receivers, but it wasn’t nearly enough to keep pace with the Eagles. Jalen Hurts played lights out the entire game, unrattled by the Chiefs defense and the aura of Mahomes as he was two seasons ago in Super Bowl 57.

The Chiefs managed to put up points in the 4th quarter, but the Eagles already had the game in the bag, burning the clock to get the game over with so they could celebrate a well fought victory over the Chiefs. In the end, the Eagles won by a score of 40-22, and this was without their prized free agency acquisition, Saquon Barkley, scoring a touchdown. Jalen Hurts was named MVP, throwing for 221 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT, and rushing for 72 yards and 1 TD.

In my opinion, this game was the worst Super Bowl in the past few seasons. Not only was the game ugly game to watch, the Chiefs were in, too, and that didn’t make it any better. I’d like to think their run of consecutive trips to the Super Bowl is over.
